Lotus-Shaped Tea Tray

Product Overview

Name: Lotus Tea Tray (Lianhua Hucheng)

Clay Type: White Duan Ni

Diameter: 11.5cm

Form: Original Design · Eggshell / Thin-Walled Tea Tray

Form Origins

This lotus-petal-shaped tea tray takes as its reference the stone lotus-platform column base from the Wei-Jin period. After Buddhism was introduced to China, the lotus became an important cultural symbol—the lotus throne (lotus seat) is the dharma seat of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, symbolizing purity and freedom from defilement. During the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties, Buddhism flourished, and lotus motifs appeared extensively in cave sculptures and stone column bases. Transforming the weighty stone carving of the column-base lotus platform into an eggshell-thin Zisha tea tray is a dual transformation of both material and spirit.
